Art education within the Summerville, South Carolina community.
What We Do

Summerville ROCKS! the Arts, and more. This Summerville Artist Guild committee works to find interesting and innovative ways to
fund two scholarships for Dorchester District 2 students, one for those majoring in art education and one for those wanting a career
in the fine arts. The group also raises awareness of the importance of art in our communitiy.
2016-2017 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Each year the Guild funds two arts scholarships for DD2 seniors. The first is named in honor of DD2 Director of Fine Arts Emeritus,
Larry Barnfield for students pursuing an education degree in the arts. The second, Summerville Artist Guild Scholarship, is for
students seeking a degree fine or applied arts.
Also a scholarship was awarded, in memory of Detta Zimmerman, a long-time member of the Guild who pursued her degree after
raising her family.
Jam Dalton, president of the Guild presented the three scholarships in May.
Abigail Nance - the Larry Barnfield Scholarship recipient and will attend Winthrop University to major in art education. “I only hope to
be as wonderful as my teachers have been to me and help students love art just as I do,” said Nance, a senior at Summerville High
Leah Waters, recipient of the Summerville Artist Guild Scholarship, will attend Utah Valley University to major in Art and Design. “I
believe art has the ability to open our eyes to a whole new level of expression and be a light in our lives,” said Waters, a senior at
Ashley Ridge High School.
Francisca Palazuelos received a scholarship in Memory of Detta Zimmerman. Fran pictured with Delbert Zimmerman(Detta’s
husband) attends the College of Charleston. She is a single mother working full time caring for her children plus going to school.
