Summerville ROCKS! the Arts, and more. This Summerville Artist Guild committee works to find interesting and innovative ways to fund
two scholarships for Dorchester District 2 students, one for those majoring in art education and one for those wanting a career in the fine
arts. The group also raises awareness of the importance of art in our communitiy.

HOLIDAY COLLABORATION WITH SUMMERVILLE ORCHESTRA
On on December 22, ensembles from the Summerville
Orchestra performed free holiday concerts across
Summerville. Guild members joined the concerts
and developed themed paintings for charity.
GUILD MEMBERS PAINT MURALS AT DORCHESTER PAWS
The new name for the local SPCA is Dorchester Paws. Members of the Guild contributed their time to paint murals
to spruce up the facilities.
2016-2017 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
The Guild funds two arts scholarships for DD2 seniors. The first is named in honor of DD2 Director of Fine Arts Emeritus,
Larry Barnfield for students pursuing an education degree in the arts. The second, Summerville Artist Guild Scholarship, is
for students seeking a degree fine or applied arts. Jan Dalton, president of the Guild presented the three scholarships in
Also a scholarship was awarded this year, in memory of Detta Zimmerman, a long-time member of the Guild who pursued her
degree after raising her family.
Abigail Nance - the Larry Barnfield Scholarship recipient and will attend Lander University to major in art education.
Leah Waters - Summerville Artist Guild Scholarship, will attend Utah Valley University to major in Art and Design.
Francisca Palazuelos - scholarship in Memory of Detta Zimmerman. Pictured with Delbert (Detta’s husband) she attends the
College of Charleston. She is a single mother working full time caring for her children plus going to school.
